Letters to the editor: Vaccine refusals have fueled COVID comeback

The Gainesville Sun
COVID comeback
This spring, as millions lined up for anti-COVID vaccinations, we seemed to be near the end of the pandemic. But then it became clear that other tens of millions were refusing to be vaccinated and were also vehemently rejecting masks and social distancing.
Now the virus, and especially its variants, are coming back strong. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. And the winners, besides the virus itself, are Donald Trump and his acolytes, like Gov. Ron DeSantis and countless other Republican state officials.
The 21 states with the highest vaccination rates all voted for Joe Biden last November, and 16 of the 17 states with the lowest vaccination rates voted for Trump. And here in DeSantis Florida we have the second-highest per capita rate of COVID cases in the country and the fourth-highest hospitalization rate. And our death rate is twice the national average. ....

Largo Police's first female major blazing a trail

Police Maj. Ann Starling is the first woman to reach the rank of major in the Largo police department.
She graduated from St. Petersburg College’s Southeastern Public Safety Institute in 2004. One of her first law-enforcement posts was inside an igloo-like structure as part of a wilderness adventure program. But life in a snow cave didn’t suit the Florida native.
Tampa Bay Newspapers interviewed Starling about her role as an administrator in the department, where she is “fortunate to be surrounded by strong, capable female leaders who inspire me every day, both in the Largo Police Department and the City of Largo as a whole,” Starling said. ....

Gopher tortoise movers sue FWC over temporary revocation of permits

But the state revoked their licenses on March 19 because it accused Kaiser and Wilson of failing to report dead tortoises, overstocking pens for the tortoises and not maintaining a pen that was in disrepair. FWC then reinstated their licenses on April 7 in a brief letter in which it described its staff revocation of the permits as a “procedural error.”
The FWC put Kaiser and Wilson out of business without any notice or a hearing or a chance to question or challenge the action, said Kenneth G. Oertel, the Tallahassee attorney who filed the lawsuit against the FWC.
“They just took it without any notice, without any process, without anything,” said Oertel. They just wrote them a letter saying your license is terminated . Well, Florida law doesn’t allow an agency to do that. You ve got to give what’s called due process.” ....
